EDGAR ALLAN POE Best known for his poems and short fiction. Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous American poets. He deserves most credit for short suspenseful mysteries and he perfected the area of horror stories. He wrote many famous poems like "The Raven" and "The Bells". Poe was a genius and very meticulous in his stories every clue had to fit and that’s why he didn't make a lot of short stories but a small collection of great short stories. He was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. Both of his parents were touring actors; both died before Poe even reached three years old. A rich merchant named Mr. Allan in Richmond, Virginia took Poe in. His childhood was uneventful although he attended the University of Virginia in 1826 for only a year. Even thought he was a good student he ran up a large gambling dept that Allan refused to pay. This prevented his return to the university and broke-off his engagement to Sarah Elmira Royster, his Richmond sweetheart. Having no way to support himself he enlisted in the army. He had already written and printed (at his own expense) his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827). Allan secured Poe's release from the army and his appointment to West Point but refused to give him money. After six months Poe apparently got kicked out of West Point for disobedience. His friends, however, gave money to him for the publication of Poems by Edgar A. This book contained the famous "To Helen" and "Israfel," poems that show the restraint and the calculated musical effects of language that was characterizing his poetry. In practice, the US Congress has little power to influence the president’s decisions. Moreover, despite President Obama’s statements, the US actions in Libya constituted a war. Whether the US went to war against Libya is still a much contested issue. The administration never made any formal declaration. According to the Independent Civil Society Report (2011, p.19), the US engaged in an international armed conflict against Libya, together with other NATO member countries. Though divided on this topic, many members of Congress and experts viewed the US intervention in Libya as constituting a war. They referred to previous practice of interventions on behalf of the US presidents. The President did not act against the power and authority of the Congress. The President circumvented Congress. Congress, on the other hand, was left quite powerless since the intervention was funded independently of the Congressional decisions. Thus, this paper will also depict how the President circumvented the War Powers Resolution. Statements by experts such as Ackerman, Hathaway and Fisher will be consulted to show how theoretically, President Obama violated the resolution. Spiro and Koh will be used, together with the Office of Legal Counsel to depict how practice has made President’s actions legal. Background of the Libyan Conflict Five years after a brutal crackdown on a public protest in Benghazi, the Libyan authorities witnessed their own demise. Every year since then, on 12 February Libyans commemorated the ‘Day of Rage’ (Amnesty International 2011, p.7). Fearing the spillover effects of neighboring revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, activists and writers were arrested prior to the demonstration. However, instead of preventing the disaster, the authorities infuriated the general population. Academics, commoners and businessmen all joined in their outcry for justice and end to an abusive, forty à ¢â‚¬â€œ year – old rule by Colonel al-Gaddafi (Amnesty International 2011, p.7). Examine the contradictions in The Great Gatsby, including its narrative styles. The novel moves on two levels: Fitzgerald makes you see the magic and romance of Gatsby's vision of ideal love, dazzling the eye with wealth; yet, at the same time, the narrator pulls us down to earth revealing the immorality, waste and corruption of those who surround Gatsby and cause his death. Examine the contradictions in The Great Gatsby, including its narrative styles. One of Fitzgerald's main aims is to show the reader that the world he illustrates in The Great Gatsby includes both dazzling wealth and corruption, both of which are evident in American society of the 1920s. These work in parallel and come together as part of the same society: the wealthy upper class. Straight away we see this as being a contradiction, as the glittering surface impression of these wealthy people conceals their true nature as an immoral, careless and unsympathetic society. This novel clearly does move on two levels. The author enables us to look into the different worlds of money and romance (and whether or not they can exist together), as it is not only a story of superficial richness, but also of lost love and the use of wealth to regain it. These themes alone are a contrast, as money is a matter of the mind and love a matter of the heart. Although Fitzgerald glamorises the lifestyles of the rich minority, he also asks us to question how attractive money really is, by conveying to us the destruction and unhappiness that huge wealth can cause underneath its dazzling exterior. We are led through the various events of the novel by our narrator, Nick Carraway, who is also Gatsby's neighbour. Nick, despite being surrounded by e... ...atsby's eventual death. Daisy, by killing a woman in Gatsby's car, represents the fact that unmaterialistic people are often downtrodden by the wealthy. The rich themselves believe that money can buy them everything, including, as in Daisy's case, a guilt-free conscience. An underlying contradiction of the novel is that Gatsby's rich guests all thought that happiness rested in money, but the truth was that it does not, and never will. For Gatsby, the source of his happiness rested in love, and whilst the rich minority took everything, including love, for granted, Gatsby never did, and it proved to be his demise. The novel's biggest contradiction shows that although love is the source of life, in this instance it has killed a man in his quest to find it. How does acting out of self-interest drive the theory of determinism well†¦ , what is determinism it is defined as the ‘means universal causation? For everything that occurs there is a corresponding cause. † In philosophy it is known as â€Å"the doctrine that all events, including human decisions, are completely determined by previously existing causes. † One states that it is corresponding cause while the other states that it is previously an existing cause.So, how does acting out of Self-Interest drive the theory of determinism; that is to say determinism is claimed that our existence is ‘pre-determined’, the that free will is, but an illusion. Many who believes in a destiny-path or so form of supernatural (Religious-faith), will be hard to believe or even comprehended determinism. Determinism, for those that are religious the decision they make them believe it’s be ordain by their decisions.But if you think about it, whatever ‘fre e-will’ choices we make that path has been destine to occur, if we chooses wrong, or right, or the alternative of right and wrong, or non-religious path what waits us, seem to be somewhat ordain by our discussion where it was ‘free-will’ of self-interest, or of religiously –â€Å"free will†. Determinism, seems to be like a line game they use to determine the path of result of one will do, well in terms of one of school. This line game is of ‘free-will’ that we chose. This line chosen will take us too many directions but, in the end the result seems somewhat pre- destine to occur.This choice we made, was out of our (students ) ‘free-will’ or â€Å"religiously- free-will’, that led us to choose that line . That line has already seemed to be pre-destining what the result will be at the end of the line. It is a very common game, in my previous school, in Japan this is how we are fairly chosen-(freely) or, destine to do what states at the end of the line. This was basically done so, we knew what we were ‘free-will’ chose our decision or ‘ordain’ to have a result when it came to doing chores and projects in school.Is there any real freedom in our behavior, or is it determined by a series of uncontrollable events, well I would say we do have a freedom to choose but, it will fall in the end or, determined in the end, the choices we made during these series of uncontrollable events. That we acted out of our own â€Å"freedom† Uncontrollable events in our life, in many result will be of our knowledge or faith that we choices out of ‘freedom’ or, of ‘free-will’ or, ‘religiously-free will’.
