James Collins Donald West History 201 December 1, 2015 TRAIL OF TEARS The trail of tears is also referred to as the period of Indian s removal. It was a period where Native Americans in the U.S were forcefully relocated following the removal of Indian Removal Act of 1830. Those who were forcibly moved were from Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, and Chickasaw and Choctaw nations in the southern U.S, an area initially referred to as the Indian Territory. Migration from Cherokee nation had begun in the early 1800’s where some Cherokee’s decided to move and settle in other parts of the country. A group of Old Settlers had moved there earlier in 1817 voluntarily to lands granted to them in Arkansas where they had a peaceful life. Afterward, they were forced to move into the I Indian Territory (A. Byers 27) Resentment of Cherokee from the whites had been building up ad it became worse after the discovery of gold in northern Georgia. White communities turned against their Cherokee neighbors due to the thirst for expansion and gold. Without consulting or questions asked, the U.S government decided that Cherokee had to be removed, leaving their lands, home and farm. Before their removal, the five groups lived together being referred to as the Five Civilized Groups. The white settlers from the southeast had been pressurizing the U.S government to remove the Native Americans. These settlers were on the Indian lands and wanted more for them. Jazz Concert Report Free Essays

Before taking Jazz class I barely knew anything about this type music. Six different bands performed fifteen pieces. Most of the pieces are written by popular Jazz composers, such as â€Å"Cantaloupe Island† by Herbie Hancock or â€Å"Donna Lee† by Charlie Parker. For example, â€Å"Preparation† was composed by Alex Reiff, who plays bass in the band called Krista White 3 PM Combo. In this report I would like to pay attention on two pieces that I enjoyed the most. The first piece is â€Å"A Phone Call with Janet† written by Jessie Crossen, trombonist in the band Krista White 3 PM Combo. One of the band’s members said that Janet happens to be Aaron Smith’s trumpeter’s mother. What was noticeable is that the composition starts with bass playing. The dynamics are very quiet in the beginning, as if somebody was starting a conversation on the phone really quietly. When trombonist starts improvising, the rhythm starts to get faster and dynamics get louder and louder. I associated faster rhythm and loud dynamics with a phone argument between two people. The pianist was improvising last. Here dynamics got softer and quieter, and rhythm gets slower, which makes it seem that the argument was resolved. In the conclusion, all instruments end the composition. The second piece I wanted to pay attention to is â€Å"Take the A Train† that was originally composed by Billy Strayhorn. At the Sac State Jazz Combos Concert it was performed by Oliver Graham Combo band. It so happened that 2 days before this concert I read about Billy Strayhorn in my Music class and it was very interesting to listen how these guys would perform it. The composition starts with all instruments playing. Then pianist improvised first. After pianist, alto took turn to improvise. One could notice a very interesting and a little bit unusual exchange between guitarist and drummer. The form of â€Å"Take the A Train† composition is 32-bar. The rhythm gets faster toward the middle of the song and dynamics are moderate throughout the composition. Overall, the concert was really great opportunity to experience a new style of music. I never thought Jazz could be the type of music I could listen to. This concert was the first Jazz concert I went to and I am looking forward to attend more in a future. It is also important to note that the only thing that may make Penelope betray her love is her promise she has given to her beloved husband. She is thinking of her son and she knows that the only way to save the house and even to save her son’s life is to betray her love and â€Å"quit† the house of her â€Å"lawful husband† (Homer XIX: 9). Again, she chooses the right thing to do. She makes the final attempt to escape from marriage, but she is ready to get married and â€Å"quit† the house of her â€Å"lawful husband, so goodly and so abounding in wealth† so that her son could live a happy life (Homer XXI: 2). It is also important to note that Penelope does not deceive her suitors and does not pretend loving anyone of them. She always says what she thinks.
